Garden beds with neat edges offer a sense of order and harmony in an outdoor space. Here are a few reasons why they can be considered beautiful:

  1. Clear Boundaries: Neatly edged garden beds define the boundaries between different elements in the garden, creating a structured and organized look. This helps to guide the eye and reduces visual clutter.
  2. Aesthetic Appeal: The clean lines created by well-maintained edges add appeal. It can transform a garden from looking overgrown to appearing curated and carefully designed.
  3. Enhanced Plant Focus: By delineating the edges, the plants within the garden beds become the focal point. This allows the colors, textures, and forms of the plants to stand out more prominently.
  4. Reduced Weed Spread: Neat edges can help prevent the encroachment of weeds into the garden bed, which not only keeps the garden looking tidy but also reduces the maintenance effort.
  5. Functional Benefits: Clean edges can make lawn mowing and other garden maintenance tasks easier. They create a clear separation between the garden bed and other areas, like pathways or lawns.
  6. Visual Flow: The structured edges contribute to the overall flow of the garden design, creating pathways and guiding movement through the space. This can be both visually pleasing and functional.
  7. Variety in Design: Neat edges don’t necessarily mean straight lines. They can also be curved or intricate, adding a sense of creativity and personal style to the garden’s design.

Overall, garden beds with neat edges bring a sense of order, beauty, and functionality to a garden, making them an appealing feature in any outdoor space.

DIY Edges

Creating neat and attractive garden edges can be done with a few simple tools and techniques. Here are some quick tips to DIY your garden edges:

Start with a clear outline of your desired garden bed shape. Use a garden hose or string to mark the desired path; this allows you to experiment with curves or straight lines before committing. Once you’re satisfied with the outline, use a sharp spade or half-moon edging tool to cut along the marked line, creating a clean edge. Aim for a depth of about 4-6 inches to ensure a noticeable separation from the lawn or other areas.

After cutting the edge, remove any grass or soil from the newly created trench. This not only defines the border but also prevents grass from creeping back into the bed. For a more polished look, consider adding a physical barrier like metal edging, stone, or bricks along the edge. This helps maintain the clean lines over time and reduces maintenance. With these simple steps, you can achieve professional-looking garden edges in your own backyard.

Regular maintenance involves trimming the edges with a spade or edging tool every few weeks to keep them sharp, and checking for weeds or grass encroachment to ensure your garden beds remain neat and well-defined.

Summer Splendor: The Importance of Early Spring Garden Preparation

As the days begin to lengthen and the chill of winter gradually subsides, we eagerly anticipates the arrival of spring. For many, this season marks the perfect opportunity to lay the groundwork for a vibrant and thriving garden come summer.

When the snow disappears, we clean up lingering autumn leaves and fallen branches. We begin dreaming of our peaceful outdoor oasis. Thoughts of entertaining on warm summer evenings and days spent enjoying the great outdoors, reminding us that it’s time to start planning.

If you like DIY projects, here are three things you can do in preparation for creating beautiful summertime spaces:

  1. Soil Preparation and Amendment:
Spring is the ideal time to assess the condition of your garden soil and make necessary amendments to ensure optimal plant health and growth. Begin by conducting a soil test to determine pH levels and nutrient deficiencies. Based on the results, amend the soil with organic matter such as compost, well-rotted manure, or peat moss to improve its structure, fertility, and drainage. Incorporating these amendments early in the season provides ample time for them to integrate and benefit the soil ecosystem, setting the stage for healthy plant growth throughout the summer.
  2. Pruning and Maintenance:
Spring is a prime opportunity to address any winter damage, overgrowth, or pruning needs in your garden and yard. Start by inspecting trees, shrubs, and perennials for dead or damaged branches, and promptly remove them to promote new growth and maintain plant vigor. Additionally, thin out overcrowded areas and selectively prune flowering shrubs to encourage a more balanced and aesthetically pleasing form. Regular maintenance tasks such as weeding, mulching, and edging also play a crucial role in tidying up the landscape and preparing it for summer planting and enjoyment.
  3. Planning and Planting:
With the groundwork laid for healthy soil and well-maintained garden beds, turn your attention to planning and planting for the summer season. Consider your garden’s unique microclimates, sunlight exposure, and existing plantings when selecting new additions. Choose a diverse mix of annuals, perennials, shrubs, vines, trees, and seasonal plants that complement each other in color, height, and bloom time to create visual interest and continuity throughout the growing season. Pay attention to spacing recommendations and plant care requirements to ensure optimal growing conditions and minimize competition for resources. By thoughtfully planning and planting in the spring, you’ll set the stage for a vibrant and flourishing garden that brings joy and beauty to your outdoor space all summer long.

Design Inspiration in Royal Oak

Royal Oak is a beautiful city and living here comes with plenty of perks, but unfortunately, the lot sizes aren’t always that big. Highland Horticultural Services loves incorporating big design ideas in small outdoor spaces to help them to live up to their potential. Don’t let your small yard keep you from having a beautiful outdoor space that you’ll enjoy year round.

We designed and installed the gardens at this property and we continue to maintain them. Our goal was to create a few different areas that feel like private spaces yet flow together cohesively as one. This offers cozy spaces that one can retreat to yet the overall design easily welcomes in a crowd as well.

Container gardens and a seating area adds a cozy space to a vibrant garden

Bright pops of color highlight outdoor seating areas, ceramic containers, and beautiful plantings while a variety of foliage and clean lines create a flowing and cohesive look to the overall design.

A planter filled with flowing sweet potato vines and contrasting annuals offers an attractive way to conceal air conditioning units. We love finding creative and attractive solutions to increase the appeal of an outdoor space.

The homeowner had bright ceramic pots which we arranged to create interest to the porch and surrounding staircase. Some were already filled with plants and then we added bright annuals for additional pops of color. If you don’t have much room in your yard for a garden, utilizing containers can be a great option. They add some fun color and beautiful design.

Side yards are often spaces that go unused. Not here. A magical pathway brings guests past a soothing pond filled with Koi, garden statuary, and perennial plants that add a sense of serenity to the space. The water in the pond can be heard and offers white noise to soften neighboring noise from the neighborhood.

As you enter the backyard, there are places to gather as well as a a private space for a hammock where one can forget all the worries of their day.

Relaxing spaces will make your yard feel like a retreat. People enjoy gathering around the fire pit with fiends and family. A hammock that is tucked away in its own private space is a great way to enjoy the beauty of the garden.

We designed the front of the property to be more practical, yet welcoming. Neatly trimmed hedges highlight beautiful perennials while annuals add a pop of color in a container planting.

A small and easy to maintain garden was added to the side of the driveway to create an attractive shade garden that adds to the overall design.

No matter the size of your space, there are always creative ways to enhance your yard and to create spaces for relaxing, socializing, and for enjoying your special and unique space.

We hope that you have found some inspiration and ideas that can help you to make some changes to your small outdoor living space. Small yards can have just as much character as a large one and with some thoughtful design you can maximize your living space to enjoy for years to come.
